If it weren’t for short cuts, most of us would never get anything done! While most shortcuts are just smarter ways of doing the same thing, sometimes taking a shortcut could be more harmful than helpful.

There’s being smart and then there’s being lazy. When it comes to your health, there are some things that you don’t want to be taking the short cut on. Find out what they are.

5 health short cuts that don’t work

Eating artificial sweeteners instead of cutting out sugar: If it’s sugar you really want to cut out, then do that. Don’t go substituting it with tons of artificial sweeteners and think you’re being very healthy. Studies have shown that consuming artificial sweeteners can actually lead to an enhanced consumption of regular sugar. That’s because your body doesn’t recognize that you have had something sweet and may actually crave for more sugar. Also, people often feel that they have consumed fewer calories by consuming artificial sugar, so they may overcompensate for it by gorging on junk food.

Not exercising and just dieting: While it’s true that dieting helps in weight loss, you cannot completely cut out exercise from your life. Exercise not only expedites the weight-loss process, it’s also absolutely necessary for overall health and fitness.

Sleeping with your contact lenses on: Sleeping with your contact lenses on a rare occasion where you’ve been too exhausted to remove them is fine. But remember, your eyes need oxygen and sleeping with your lenses on hampers the flow of oxygen. This can lead to serious eye problems like corneal ulcers. So remember, however tired or zoned out you may be, always remove your contact lenses before sleeping.

Having your fruits in the form of juice: The myth that drinking fruit juice is as nutritious as eating the fruit has been doing the rounds for far too long. When you drink juice, you miss out on the very important component of fibre. Also, many packaged juices are filled with sugar and can actually be more damaging than good. Get into the habit of eating fruit everyday. You won’t regret it.

Popping nutrition supplements instead of eating healthy food: The quality of nutrients you get from real food is far higher than what you can ever hope to get from supplements. In fact, how you consume supplements can even put you at risk for consuming too much of one nutrient and not enough of another. Unless you have a deficiency and your doctor has prescribed certain nutrition supplements to you, do not fall for this short cut.
